There were 11 Gurus which included 10 human Gurus and 1 book.
Guru = A religious teacher/someone who brings light to where there was darkness.
The 10 Human Gurus (and the dates they were alive) :
1) Guru Nanak (1469 - 1539)
Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism. He found it over 500 years ago.
2) Guru Angad (1504 - 1552)
Guru Angad started the Langar (free kitchen) and the Gurmukhi Script, which the Sikh holy book is written in.
3) Guru Amar Das (1479 - 1574)
Guru Amar Das made Emperor Akbar agree to eat on the floor with everyone else before he would talk to him.
4) Guru Ram Das (1534 - 1581)
Guru Ram Das spread the Sikh message around India and set up the pool at Amritsar.
5) Guru Arjan (1563 - 1606)
Guru Arjan built the Golden Temple (Harimandir) at Amritsar.
6) Guru Har Gobind (1595 - 1644)
Guru Har Gobind's release from prison is celebrated by Sikhs at Diwali.
7) Guru Har Rai (1630 - 1661)
Guru Har Rai was the grandson of Guru Har Gobind.
8) Guru Har Krishan (1626 - 1664)
Guru Har Krishan looked after people with smallpox (a deadly disease) but caught it himself and sadly died.
9) Guru Tegh Bahadur (1621 - 1675)
Guru Tegh Bahadur sacrificed his own life for the right of others to follow their own religion.
10) Guru Gobind Singh (1666 - 1708)
Guru Gobind Singh was the final human Guru.
Guru Gobind Singh decided there were to be no more human Gurus. So, after him he decided there was going to be a special book called the Guru Granth Sahib to guide people. This was the eleventh Guru.
